Baviaanskloof Wilderness Camp — Joachimskraal Restcamp
Joachimskraal is one of the few established rest camps operated by Eastern Cape Parks inside the Baviaanskloof Mega Reserve, sitting deep in the kloof along the seasonal river corridor. Expect basic but functional: braai stands, long-drop toilets, and cold-water ablutions. The surrounding valley — fynbos on the slopes, riverine bush on the flats — is stunning at dawn. Capacity is limited and the place fills on winter weekends when the 4×4 crowd rolls through. Book ahead through ECPTA.
Access is via the main Baviaanskloof gravel road between Willowmore and Patensie — passable to high-clearance 4WD in dry conditions, genuinely technical after rain. No fuel inside the reserve; fill up in Willowmore or Patensie before entry. Cell signal is essentially zero inside the kloof. Self-sufficient only.
Deep kloof camp — braai pits and big silence.
