Nossob Waterhole — Kgalagadi Fossil River Lion and Gemsbok Congregation Point
The Nossob riverbed hasn’t flowed above ground in living memory, but its underground water feeds a string of artificial waterholes maintained by SANParks along the 4WD track connecting Nossob Camp to Twee Rivieren. The waterhole near Nossob Camp is the anchor — a flat sandy depression with a concrete water trough, open skies, and zero shade. Lions patrol this corridor regularly, and late afternoon here means watching gemsbok, springbok, and blue wildebeest jockey for position while something predatory watches from the riverine scrub. Bring binoculars and patience.
Access is strictly via the internal park track — no shortcuts, no bush bashing. You need a valid KTP permit and you must be back at camp before gate closing time, which varies by season. The track is deep sand in places; deflate to 1.5 bar and stay in 4L. No walking outside vehicles anywhere on this stretch.
Lions, gemsbok, and fossil riverbed silence.
