El Questro Wilderness Park — Pentecost River Upper Flats Dispersed Camp

Dispersed Camping

Above the famous Pentecost River crossing, the river flats open up into wide gravel bars flanked by spinifex slopes and ancient boab trees. This is classic Kimberley dispersed country — no signs, no bins, no facilities. You pick your flat spot, dig your own cat hole, and fall asleep to the sound of the river. Crocodile country is real here; keep food secured and stay out of the water after dark. Best suited to self-sufficient rigs with full water carry.

Access is off the Gibb River Road on the eastern approach from Kununurra, dropping toward the river on the unsealed station track. Conditions vary dramatically by season — the crossing itself is impassable in the wet and dicey in the shoulder months. Dry season only (May–September). Check water levels at the Kununurra visitor centre before heading in. No campfire permits are issued here; total fire ban applies during high-fire-risk periods.
