Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana is a legitimate wilderness 4×4 destination, not a graded safari-park road. The track from North Gate (Khwai Gate) southwest to Xakanaxa Lagoon crosses seasonal floodplains of the Okavango Delta that shift dramatically by month — what’s a dry pan in September is a thigh-deep crossing in April. The Interior Third Bridge crossing is the most notorious choke point: a narrow log bridge over a genuine crocodile-infested channel, with hippos that absolutely do not yield. Tracks through mopane forest between water holes are soft, churned, and rutted from heavy safari vehicles. Elephants own this road and they know it.
This is a moderate-to-difficult drive by raw terrain standards, but the wildlife density elevates the stakes — a breakdown here is not just an inconvenience. A stock high-clearance 4WD with a snorkel, decent all-terrain tires, and a basic recovery kit will handle most of it during dry season. Low-range is mandatory on the sandy tracks and any water approach. Botswana National Parks entry fees and reserved camping at Xakanaxa must be booked in advance through the DWNP online portal — spots fill months out. Best season is May through October. Fuel up in Maun; there is none inside the reserve.

Maun is your last fuel stop before entering Moremi, roughly 100km from the North Gate — fill everything including jerry cans before you leave town. The 87km route through delta tracks, deep sand, and low-range crawling will burn fuel hard, so plan for well under your highway range and don't rely on finding fuel again until you're back in Maun.
