Gibb River Road — Home Valley Station to Wyndham via Cambridge Gulf and Keep River — Kimberley Dry Season Eastern Exit

The Kimberley's brutal, beautiful eastern exit.

Difficult

Most drivers celebrate reaching El Questro and call the Gibb done. Push another 50 kilometres east and you hit Home Valley Station, where the track narrows, the corrugations get personal, and the Cambridge Gulf starts pulling the horizon apart. The run from Home Valley to Wyndham via the Cockburn Range’s eastern flank is where the Kimberley stops performing for tourists and shows its actual face — bulldust pockets, creek-bed crossings still wet late in the dry, and a final climb to Wyndham’s Five Rivers Lookout that drops every major Kimberley waterway into one frame. The Pentecost River crossing behind you, the Keep River ahead — this stretch earns its reputation.

Treat this as a continuation of a multi-day Gibb traverse, not a standalone day run. High-clearance 4WD with a compressor, dual-spare policy, and at minimum 80 litres of additional fuel is the baseline — Wyndham’s servo is the only realistic top-up for a long stretch. Drive the Kimberley between May and September only; this road is genuinely impassable wet season, not just uncomfortable. Cell service is effectively zero from Home Valley until Wyndham’s edge. What you get out of it is the Kimberley’s full punch — ancient ranges, tidal country, and a cold beer at the Wyndham Pub that you will have earned.

Frequently asked questions

What's the minimum vehicle setup to drive this eastern exit section without getting stranded?

High-clearance 4WD is non-negotiable — a stock Prado or Land Cruiser with a proper lift will handle it, but low-clearance SUVs will get punished. Carry two spare tyres; the corrugations and sharp rock edges eat rubber fast on this stretch.

What happens if you try this route outside the May–September dry season?

The road closes entirely in the wet season — typically October through April — due to flooding, impassable creek crossings, and road washouts. Even at the tail end of dry season in late September, check current conditions with the Shire of Wyndham-East Kimberley before committing.

Do you need permits to drive through Home Valley Station and into Keep River National Park?

Driving through Home Valley Station requires no separate permit for through-traffic on the Gibb, but if you're camping on station land you'll need to book directly with Home Valley. Keep River National Park entry is free, but camping fees apply if you're staying overnight inside the park boundary.

What's the hardest section to actually drive on this route?

The corrugated dirt between Home Valley and the Cambridge Gulf approach is relentless and will rattle your rig and your fillings loose — sustained corrugations at this level cause more mechanical failures than any single obstacle. Drop tyre pressure to around 28–32 PSI and keep your speed disciplined; pushing faster to smooth it out wrecks suspension components.

How far is it to the nearest fuel stop, and is there any water available on route?

Fuel is available at Home Valley Station at the start and in Wyndham at the end — 90km apart — so range anxiety shouldn't be an issue if you started the Gibb with a full tank. There is no reliable potable water between Home Valley and Wyndham, so carry a minimum of 10 litres per person for this segment.
