Cerro Mohinora — Sierra Madre Occidental Highpoint Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Cerro Mohinora sits at the southern end of Chihuahua’s Sierra Madre Occidental and is the state’s highest summit, topping out around 10,800 feet. From the approach roads and upper slopes you get a sweeping read on the canyon system that drains toward Batopilas and Urique below — deep barrancas cutting thousands of feet into the plateau. The Tarahumara (Rarámuri) people have lived and run these ridges for centuries. It’s raw, remote terrain with pine and oak giving way to exposed volcanic rock near the top.

Access is via rough dirt tracks off the Creel–Guadalupe y Calvo corridor — routes that require high-clearance 4WD and benefit from local knowledge. No formal infrastructure at the summit. Cell service is nonexistent. This is a place to orient yourself to the scale of what you’re driving into before dropping down toward Batopilas. Go in the dry season (October–May); summer monsoon makes the approach roads slick and crossing the arroyos unpredictable.

Chihuahua's highest peak above the barrancas.
