Café du Sud — Merzouga Desert Crossroads and Overland Intel Stop

Point of Interest

Merzouga’s main drag is a short strip of guesthouses and cafés sitting on the edge of one of the most dramatic sand seas in North Africa. Café du Sud sits in that strip and functions as a natural gathering point — local guides, overland crews, and desert travelers swap route conditions here daily. The tea is real, the tagine is solid, and the intel about dune access tracks, fuel availability, and Erg Chebbi piste conditions is the kind you can’t Google. When the erg has shifted after windstorms, someone here will know.

Merzouga itself sits at roughly 1,000m elevation and is the last paved-road settlement before the Grand Erg Oriental swallows your tracks. Cell signal exists in town but dies fast once you push into the dunes. Top up water, confirm your fuel load, and talk to someone local before committing to any deep dune piste. The sand does not care about your schedule.

Mint tea and dune intel at the erg's edge.
