Erg Chebbi — Grand Erg Oriental Dune Corridor Dispersed Camp
Pull off the piste west of Merzouga and you’re sleeping in one of the most dramatic landscapes on earth. The dunes of Erg Chebbi rise to around 150 metres and glow orange-red at last light. Camping here is entirely informal — overlanders park on firm sand at the dune margins where the piste widens, typically between the small mechta settlements of Hassi Labied and Merzouga. No signage, no fee collection, no facilities. Expect camel-tour operators and quad bikes during the day; by 10pm it quiets down hard. Zero light pollution once the village generators cut off.
Access from Merzouga is straightforward on the sandy piste that skirts the western dune edge — 4WD and aired-down tyres are mandatory. Sand conditions shift after wind events; what was firm yesterday can be soft today. Best season is October through March. Summer heat is extreme and daytime temps exceed 45°C. No water on-site — carry everything from Merzouga village.
Sleep under Saharan stars at the dune edge.
