Rocky Point — Skeleton Coast Shipwreck and Seal Colony Headland

Rocky Point sits roughly midway through the Skeleton Coast Park’s southern zone, and it earns its reputation hard. A Cape fur seal colony of tens of thousands animals crowds the shore — the noise, the smell, and the sheer mass of wildlife hit you before you see them. Rusted wreck fragments litter the black basalt shoreline, remnants of vessels that misjudged the fog banks and the surf. The Benguela Current rolls cold upwelling water into the shore, keeping air temperatures lower than you’d expect this close to the Tropic of Capricorn. This is raw, untouched coastline at its most elemental — no shade, no services, nothing softening it.

Access is via the D3245 gravel track inside Skeleton Coast NWR; you need a valid park permit. The road between Ugabmund Gate and Springbokwasser is corrugated and sandy in sections — a high-clearance 4WD is non-negotiable. Fuel before you enter: there is none inside the park.
