Medano Pass Road
Sand dunes to mountain pass backcountry route
Medano Pass Road cuts 22 miles from Great Sand Dunes National Park through the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the Wet Mountain Valley, following a historic supply route used by early settlers and ranchers. The first 5 miles cross Medano Creek multiple times—expect deep sand washes and seasonal creek crossings that can stop unprepared vehicles cold. After climbing through piñon and juniper, the route hits Medano Pass at 9,982 feet with sweeping views back to the massive dunefield and the towering Sangre de Cristos.
This moderate route demands high clearance and 4WD for the creek crossings and soft sand sections, especially on the park side. The road is typically passable May through October, but spring snowmelt can create impassable creek conditions and summer thunderstorms turn sandy sections into quicksand. A backcountry permit is required to camp in the park, but dispersed camping is allowed on Forest Service land beyond the pass. It’s a unique chance to see the dunes from the backside while crossing genuine Colorado ranch country.
