Sturt Creek Crossing — Canning Stock Route Southern Approach
If you’re running the CSR from south to north, the Sturt Creek crossing near the Kidson Track junction is one of those stops where you want to take a breath and check your gear. The creek bed is wide, sandy, and deceptively soft in spots — it’s pushed unsuspecting rigs sideways more than once. Surrounding country is classic Kimberley fringe desert: spinifex, scattered bloodwoods, and big sky in every direction. Get your tyre pressures right before you hit the sand.
Access is via the Kidson Track from Halls Creek. The crossing varies considerably with season — after rain it can hold water and become a serious mud trap. Check with Halls Creek locals or DBCA before you roll. No facilities, no signage worth trusting. Self-sufficient rigs only.
Sandy ford — check pressures, check season.
