Canning Stock Route — Lake Gregory (Paruku) Southern Shore Dispersed Camp
Lake Gregory, known as Paruku to the Walmajarri people, is a permanent freshwater lake sitting just east of the Kidson Track near the northern end of the CSR run into Halls Creek. The southern shore offers wide, flat red-sand camping with jaw-dropping reflections and massive brolga flocks in the wet. It’s genuinely remote — this is not a campground, there are no facilities, and you won’t see another vehicle some nights. Capacity is strictly what the land can handle; keep groups small and spread out away from the shoreline vegetation.
Access from the Kidson Track requires a short push east — the track conditions vary wildly by season. After significant rain, the lake expands and some approaches flood out entirely. Dry season (April–September) is the window. You need a self-sufficient 4WD setup: no water, no shade structures, no toilets. Confirm entry permissions with the Paruku IPA rangers before rolling in — access to some sections of the lake requires prior arrangement with the local land council.
Permanent lake, red sand, zero facilities.
