Mojave National Preserve — Piute Valley BLM Dispersed Camp

This is the staging ground for the eastern approach to the Mojave Road via Piute Gorge Wash. Wide, flat desert hardpan with creosote and Joshua trees scattered across the valley floor. No facilities, no signage, no neighbors most nights. You’re on BLM land managed by the Needles Field Office — 14-day limit applies. Fire restrictions are seasonal and enforced; check current conditions before you build one. Cell signal is essentially nonexistent out here. Fill water and fuel in Needles before you drop into the valley.

Access is via Needles Highway south from I-40 or dirt roads heading west off US-95 near the Piute Valley Road junction. High-clearance is strongly recommended — the wash crossings and loose desert surface will bog down a street rig fast. Spring and fall are the sweet spots; summer heat here is genuine and dangerous. This is the real eastern gate to one of the West’s most iconic overland routes.
