Pentecost River Crossing — Gibb River Road Iconic Ford

The Pentecost River crossing on the Gibb River Road is the Kimberley’s defining moment. Wide, sandy-bottomed, and flanked by the Cockburn Range’s blood-red ramparts, this is where your rig either earns its keep or costs you a recovery. Water levels vary wildly — a trickle in the dry season, a chest-deep torrent after wet season rains. Saltwater crocodiles are resident here year-round. Do not wade in to check depth. Use a stick from the bank, watch what vehicles ahead of you do, and commit. It’s approximately 400–600mm deep in mid-dry season and can be impassable from November through April.

The crossing sits roughly 50km west of El Questro Station on the Gibb River Road. No signage warns about crocs — that’s just Kimberley reality. Check the crossing status at El Questro or Mornington before you roll. High-clearance 4WD mandatory. The backdrop alone is worth the drive, even if you’re not crossing.
