Slana River Campground — Wrangell-St. Elias NP Nabesna Road Trailhead Camp

Slana River Campground sits right at the mouth of the Nabesna Road corridor inside Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, making it the logical first or last night for anyone running the full road. It’s a small, quiet NPS campground — pull-through sites, vault toilets, and a fire ring setup that feels honest: no hookups, no crowds, just boreal spruce and the sound of the Slana River moving past. The Wrangell peaks rim the horizon to the south. Cell service is essentially nonexistent out here.

Access is paved to Slana off the Tok Cutoff (AK-1), then a short dirt spur into the campground — manageable for any rig. Open seasonally, typically late May through early September, though shoulder dates shift with snowpack. No reservations — first come, first served. Confirm seasonal status with the NPS Slana Ranger Station, which sits adjacent to the campground and is worth a stop for current road conditions on Nabesna itself.
