Kinchega National Park — Darling River Floodplain Dispersed Camp

Kinchega National Park sits hard on the Darling River about 110 km southeast of Broken Hill, and the floodplain fringes here offer some of the most iconic dispersed camping along the Siberia Track corridor. You’re parking up under massive river red gums on flat sandy ground with the Darling sliding past — brown, slow, and wide. Wildlife is dense: kangaroos, emus, pelicans, and birdlife that’ll keep a pair of binos busy. No set campsites, no concrete, no amenities beyond pit toilets at a couple of designated spots — just space. Fires subject to NSW seasonal total fire bans; carry a camp stove in summer.

Access is via the main dirt road from Menindee — passable to high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but the floodplain clay turns to axle-deep bog after rain. The Darling floods unpredictably; check NSW NPWS conditions before committing. Nearest fuel and resupply is Menindee township, about 20 km north. A NSW National Parks pass is required — purchase online or at self-registration stations.
