Condom Road — Hatcher Pass Road to Willow Creek Summit via Independence Mine

Gold mines and tundra summits above Anchorage.

Moderate

Hatcher Pass Road (Parks Highway to Wasilla, then north on the Fishhook-Willow Road) climbs out of the Matanuska-Susitna Valley into tundra so fast it feels like the mountains are pulling you up. The Independence Mine State Historical Park sits at mile 17 of the upper road — a ghost town of wooden mine buildings half-buried in avalanche debris, still clinging to the hillside at 3,200 feet. From there the maintained gravel turns rougher as you push toward Willow Creek Summit. Snow patches linger on the north-facing slopes well into July, and the summit itself regularly socks in with fog in a matter of minutes. The descent toward the Parks Highway side is steeper and looser than most people expect after the mellow valley approach.

Moderate difficulty overall — a stock high-clearance 4WD handles it fine in summer. The road is narrow with limited passing spots on the upper switchbacks and is often one-lane. No permit required for the road itself; Independence Mine charges a day-use fee to walk the mine grounds. Best season is late June through September — the road closes at the summit for winter. Cell service drops to nothing above Hatcher Pass Lodge. This is one of the most underrated day-drives out of Anchorage and a legitimate overland connector between the Mat-Su Valley and the Parks Highway corridor north of Willow.

Frequently asked questions

Can a stock Tacoma or 4Runner handle Condom Road without modifications?

Yes, a stock high-clearance 4WD like a Tacoma or 4Runner can run this route in dry conditions. The road is rough gravel and dirt with some rutted sections, but nothing that demands a lift — just don't try it in a Subaru or low-clearance crossover.

When does Hatcher Pass Road actually open for the season and when does it close?

The summit section typically opens late June once snow clears and closes by October, sometimes earlier after early season snowfall. Alaska DOT can close it without much warning — check current road conditions at 511.alaska.gov before you go.

Do you need a permit or pass to drive through and camp at Hatcher Pass?

No permit is required to drive the route. The Independence Mine State Historical Park has a $5 day-use parking fee if you stop there. Dispersed camping along the corridor is allowed on State land outside designated park boundaries.

What's the hardest section of the route and what should I actually expect?

The stretch approaching Willow Creek Summit above Independence Mine is the roughest — loose rock, steep grade, and exposure to wind and weather that can change fast at altitude. The difficulty is less about technical obstacles and more about conditions: wet rock and sudden fog can make it feel like a completely different road.

Is there any water source along the route, and should I plan on resupplying in Palmer?

There are streams along the lower sections, but treat everything — giardia is present in Alaskan backcountry water. Top up in Palmer before heading out; there are no services on the route and no cell service once you climb above the valley.
