Richtersveld Toe of the Sneeuberg — Eksteenfontein to Kuboes via the Gannakouriep Canyon

The Gannakouriep Canyon cuts through the Richtersveld like a wound that never healed — ancient lava flows, razor quartz ridges, and dry river beds that laugh at two-wheel drive. This track runs roughly 90 km from Eksteenfontein south to Kuboes, crossing the Gannakouriep River multiple times through a gorge that narrows to claustrophobic widths before spilling onto the Orange River floodplain. The Nama people have worked this country for centuries; you’ll pass stone kraals and ghost-orange aloe fields before the canyon walls close in around you. Halfway through, the Toe of the Sneeuberg ridge forces a crawl up loose volcanic scree that has rolled more than one unlucky rig onto its roof sills.
Rated difficult to expert depending on recent rainfall — a single thunderstorm upstream can flood the canyon crossings without warning. Minimum: a capable short-wheelbase 4WD with a snatch block, rated recovery points, and full-size spare. Self-sufficient fuel load required — Eksteenfontein’s supply is unreliable. Best driven May through August in the cooler dry months. No permit needed for the through-road, but you’re in CapeNature buffer territory so travel respectfully. No cell service. The Gannakouriep Canyon sections have tight rocky switchbacks and compressed canyon approaches that heavily favor short-wheelbase vehicles. A long-wheelbase rig can get seriously stuck or high-centered with no easy recovery option — a short-wheelbase 4WD with low range, a skid plate setup, and decent articulation is the minimum you want here.
What's the trail like in summer — is it passable December through February?
Summer in the Richtersveld means extreme heat pushing 45°C (113°F), flash flood risk in the canyon, and no shade. The trail is technically open but genuinely dangerous in those conditions. Stick to May through August when temps are tolerable and the canyon crossings are more predictable.

There is nothing between the two settlements — no fuel, no reliable water source, no resupply of any kind. Fuel up completely in Eksteenfontein before departure and carry all drinking water for 2-3 days. The Gannakouriep River may have water depending on season but treat it before drinking.
