Stony Creek Track — Birdsville to Betoota via the Diamantina Channel Country

Betoota was once the most remote town in Australia with a permanent pub — now it’s a ghost town, and the track connecting it to Birdsville across the Diamantina’s braided flood channels is every bit as desolate as that sounds. The Stony Creek Track runs roughly 100 kilometres southwest from Birdsville through classic gibber plain — loose, flat, ankle-rolling rock underfoot and a corrugated dirt track that punishes anything under-tyred. The Diamantina floodplains can close this track without warning after rain; what looks like dry clay from a distance becomes axle-deep mud that sets like concrete. The old Betoota Hotel site is the midpoint, a lonely ruin worth stopping at if only to picture the drover culture that made this country.
Moderate to Difficult depending on conditions — in the dry season this is manageable for any properly equipped 4WD; after any rain, it becomes genuinely impassable and dangerous. Minimum requirements: high-clearance 4WD, two spare tyres, UHF CB, and at least 100 litres of fuel from Birdsville (next fuel is Innamincka or Windorah, each 300+ km away). Water: carry everything. Best season is April through August. No permits required but always sign the Birdsville Police register before departing — this is standard practice and the rangers take it seriously. The Channel Country rewards patience and preparation with absolute solitude and some of the most ancient-feeling landscapes on the continent.
