Trans-Tasman Piste — Lindis Pass to Molesworth Station via the Rainbow Road
NZ's biggest station, no bridges, no service.
The Rainbow Road through Molesworth Station is New Zealand’s largest farm — roughly 180,000 hectares of high-country runs managed by Land Information New Zealand. The route connects Hanmer Springs in Canterbury to St Arnaud in the Nelson Lakes district, traversing the Awatere and Rainbow valleys via a series of river fords through the Wairau River headwaters. The terrain is rolling tussock grassland punctuated by sharp river crossings — the Wairau headwater fords in particular can run high after rain and require careful reading. There are no bridges. The isolation is genuine: no services, no cell coverage, no rescue coming fast if you snap an axle.
The road is managed by LINZ and is typically open from Labour Weekend (late October) through Queen’s Birthday Weekend (early June); it closes in winter due to snow and ice. A high-clearance 4WD is mandatory — river crossings and the rough track surface will strand a stock sedan immediately. Camping is permitted at Molesworth Station homestead and designated areas only; register your trip before entering. Carry enough fuel for the full 115 km plus a buffer, and pack water purification — the high-country streams are clean but giardia is present in NZ backcountry. This one rewards patience and preparation with scenery that’ll rearrange your idea of what remote looks like.

The Wairau River crossings are where trips end for unprepared rigs — multiple unbridged crossings with no alternative line, and water levels can rise fast after upstream rain. At high water, crossing depth can exceed 600mm with a strong current; if it looks sketchy, it probably is, and there's no one coming to pull you out.

Carry a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) — it's not optional on this route, it's the only reliable emergency signalling you have for 115 km.
