Hoggar–Tassili Trans-Saharan Link — In Amenas to Djanet via Illizi Corridor

Eastern Sahara. No margin. No mercy.

Extreme

This is not the tourist circuit. The piste from In Amenas south to Djanet via Illizi runs through one of the emptiest quarters of the eastern Sahara — true erg country broken by hammada flats and the occasional dry riverbed that can fill with zero warning. The route passes through Illizi, a small administrative center with fuel, before the track deteriorates into sand navigation south toward the Tassili cliffs. Djanet itself sits in a canyon basin ringed by orange sandstone walls carved over millennia; arriving by the southern piste rather than the sealed northern road feels earned.

This is an expert-level expedition route, full stop. Navigation by GPS and paper topo is mandatory — there are no markers and tracks bifurcate constantly across the erg. A minimum two-vehicle convoy is non-negotiable; a single breakdown here can be fatal. Carry at minimum 400 liters of fuel and 100 liters of water per vehicle. Sand ladders, a high-lift jack, and recovery gear must be aboard. Algerian law requires a registered guide for travel in this zone; arrange through a licensed agency in Tamanrasset or Djanet well in advance. Best season is October through March. Summer temperatures exceed 50°C and make this route genuinely life-threatening.

Frequently asked questions

What kind of vehicle do I actually need for this route — will a lifted pickup with a locker cut it?

A stock or mildly built truck won't survive this. You need a purpose-built expedition 4WD with dual spare tires, long-range fuel capacity (minimum 500+ mile range), sand ladders, a high-lift jack, and a full recovery kit. Soft sand, corrugated piste, and zero infrastructure for 430 miles means a mechanical failure without proper gear is a survival situation, not an inconvenience.

What's the travel window — can you run this in summer?

October through March only. Summer temperatures in this corridor regularly exceed 50°C (122°F), which is fatal territory without permanent support. Even in the best season, daytime heat is aggressive — plan your driving hours accordingly.

Do you need a permit to drive this route, and how hard is it to get?

Yes, mandatory permits are required through the Algerian Ministry of Interior and the Wilaya d'Illizi. Foreign nationals must also travel with a licensed Algerian guide, and entry into the Tassili n'Ajjer area requires separate authorization. Start the paperwork 3-6 months out — this is not a walk-up permit situation.

What's the hardest section and what makes it dangerous?

The Illizi Corridor's mid-section across the erg margins is the crux — deep, unpredictable soft sand with no established track in places, combined with the Tassili plateau edge where navigation errors can put you on impassable rocky terrain with no turnaround room. No cell service, no recovery services, and no passing traffic means a stuck vehicle is your problem alone.

How much fuel capacity do I need, and are there any resupply points between In Amenas and Djanet?

Fuel availability is unreliable and cannot be counted on between In Amenas and Djanet — treat this as a zero-resupply corridor. Carry enough fuel for at minimum 600+ miles to account for soft sand consumption, which can cut your range by 30-40%. Illizi town may offer a fuel opportunity mid-route but verify before you leave; do not plan your fuel math around it.
