Urupukapuka Island Campsite

Urupukapuka is the largest island in the Bay of Islands and one of New Zealand’s most accessible island campsites managed by DOC. You’re not driving here — this is boat country. Sites are spread across several bays including Otiao Bay and Otaio Bay, each with basic facilities: composting toilets, water (treat before drinking), and flat ground for tents or small shelters. The island has no permanent residents, light foot traffic outside summer, and genuine quiet once the day-trippers head back to Paihia.

Water taxis and ferries run regularly from Paihia and Russell; bring everything you need for your stay. No vehicle access whatsoever — this one’s for the overlander who can unplug for a few days. DOC bookings required in summer (December–February). It fills fast. The walking tracks connecting the bays are excellent, and snorkeling off the rocky points is worth the trip alone.
