Purnululu National Park (Bungle Bungle Range)
The Bungle Bungle Range in Western Australia’s Kimberley region is a UNESCO World Heritage site that earns every superlative thrown at it. These extraordinary orange-and-black banded sandstone towers have been weathering into their dome shapes for over 350 million years. The gorge walks — Echidna Chasm and Cathedral Gorge in particular — are world-class. The park is massive, remote, and genuinely wild. There are two established DBCA campgrounds (Walardi and Kurrajong) with basic facilities. It gets busy June–August; book well ahead.
The 53km access track off the Great Northern Highway is corrugated, rocky in sections, and crosses several creek beds — it is 4WD only, no exceptions. The park is closed November–March (wet season). Fuel is not available inside; nearest is Turkey Creek (Warmun). Allow at least two days minimum — one is not enough.
