Toubkal Summit — High Atlas Roof of North Africa Viewpoint

Jebel Toubkal dominates the High Atlas like it owns the place, because it does. The summit sits above a scree-and-snow world that feels nothing like the red desert Morocco gets famous for. From the ridge you can see across to the Sahara on a clear day — sand meeting snow, which is the kind of contrast that makes overlanders stop talking and just stare. The trailhead village of Imlil is the base camp for most approaches, sitting at around 1,740 m with mule tracks, guesthouses, and a mountain refugio higher up.

Getting to Imlil from Marrakech is fully paved — about 90 minutes south through the Mizane Valley. Beyond Imlil, the track to the Toubkal refuge is mule path only, no vehicle access. Snowpack on the upper mountain runs November through May; crampons required in winter. Even if you’re not summiting, the drive up the Ourika and Mizane valleys through Berber villages is worth every kilometre. Verify mountain hut booking before the busy summer season.
