Skeleton Coast — Shipwreck Lodge Dune Belt Viewpoint

The Skeleton Coast earns its name. Bleached whale bones, corroded iron hulls half-buried in sand, and relentless fog rolling in off the Benguela Current — this is one of the most raw, unforgiving stretches of coastline on the planet. The dune belt north of the Hoarusib River mouth offers sweeping views of shipwrecks visible from the shore, including the Eduard Bohlen wreck further south and the Zeila near Henties Bay. The silence out here is the kind that makes you check your mirrors.

Access to the northern Skeleton Coast requires a permit from NamParks — no permit, no entry, full stop. The road in from Springbokwasser Gate is sandy and corrugated. Travel with a second vehicle, run aired-down tyres, and carry substantial fuel. Best visited May through September when temps are manageable and the fog creates that legendary cinematic atmosphere.
