Okavango Delta — Chief’s Island Airstrip Viewpoint

The Okavango Delta is one of those landscapes that stops you cold. From the elevated termite mound ridgelines near Chief’s Island in Moremi Game Reserve, you get a sense of just how vast this water system is — reed channels threading into islands, hippos surfacing in brown water, fish eagles hanging overhead. This is the defining POI of northern Botswana for any overland route pushing toward Maun. The delta itself floods seasonally, peaking July through September, which is when the game viewing is at its absolute best.

Vehicle access is limited to the periphery — specifically the Moremi Game Reserve eastern and western entrances via Maun. The interior is boat and air only. Most overlanders use Maun as a base and do mokoro or motorboat excursions. Sandy 2WD tracks into Moremi can get soft; 4WD is standard. Tsetse flies are active — long sleeves, closed windows in thick bush.
