Old Telegraph Track – Cape York

The Old Telegraph Track runs roughly 580km from Bramwell Junction to the tip of Cape York Peninsula in Queensland’s far north, following the route of the original 1880s overland telegraph line. It earns its reputation at places like Gunshot Creek — a near-vertical drop into a rocky creek crossing that has rolled more rigs than most people care to count — and Cockatoo Creek, Palm Creek, and Bertie Creek, each capable of swallowing stock vehicles whole. This is not a scenic drive with some bumps. The OTT is a full-commitment remote track that demands experience, recovery gear, and the right mindset before you air down.
Expect deep, axle-sucking mud holes, creek banks that test your body roll limits, and sections that are pure rock ledge. A properly built, high-clearance 4WD with a locker front and rear, snatch straps, a hi-lift jack, and a MaxTrax set is baseline — a winch is strongly recommended. Best season is July to September in the dry; wet season makes this route genuinely life-threatening. Fuel resupply at Weipa or Bamaga. No permit required for the track itself, but surrounding national park areas have their own conditions. Cell service is non-existent — carry a PLB or satellite communicator. If you get to the tip, you’ve earned it.

Can a lightly lifted 4WD with mud terrains handle the OTT?
No. The Old Telegraph Track requires a highly modified 4WD with front and rear lockers, a winch with at least 9,000lb rating, and a snorkel. Gunshot Creek alone has claimed rigs that were 'almost built enough.' If you're asking whether your setup is sufficient, it probably isn't.
When does the OTT open and close each year?
The track is only accessible in the dry season, roughly July through September. It closes completely during the wet season — crossings like Gunshot, Cockatoo, and Nolan's Brook become impassable deathtraps. Don't gamble on shoulder months; the Cape doesn't give second chances.
Do you need a permit to drive the Old Telegraph Track?

What's the hardest section and what actually makes it dangerous?
Gunshot Creek is the one. The entry is a near-vertical drop of around 3–4 metres into a rocky creek bed with zero margin for error on line choice. People bypass it via the Bypass Track, and there's no shame in that — the danger is real, rollovers are common, and recoveries can take hours with no help coming fast.
How far is the nearest fuel stop, and how much range do I actually need?
Fuel is available in Weipa (south) and Bamaga near the tip, but between those points you're looking at stretches well over 200km of hard going that burns fuel fast. Carry a minimum of 200 litres total capacity — long-range tank plus jerry cans — and calculate on 4WD low consumption, not highway figures.
