Progress Station Russian Antarctic Base
Progress Station operates on the Larsemann Hills coast of Prydz Bay, East Antarctica, and has been significantly upgraded since the 2000s to become one of Russia’s primary Antarctic logistics nodes. The station runs a gravel airstrip capable of handling wheeled aircraft — a serious logistical advantage in a continent where most airfields are skiways. Fuel storage, vehicle support for Kharkovchanka and Bombardier tracked vehicles, and modern accommodation make this one of the better-equipped Russian bases. It serves as a regional hub for coordination with China’s Zhongshan Station, located just a few kilometers away.
Resupply comes via the R/V Akademik Fedorov or similar vessels out of Cape Town or Hobart. The proximity to Zhongshan means the Larsemann Hills area has more multi-national logistics activity than most Antarctic coastal zones. All access requires Russian Antarctic Expedition clearance through AARI.
