Zhongshan Station Chinese Antarctic Base
Zhongshan Station is operated by the Chinese Arctic and Antarctic Administration (CAA) and has been active since 1989 on the Larsemann Hills, Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. It’s a substantial year-round base with buildings for science, accommodation, fuel storage, and communications. The station supports summer and winterover crews and serves as the coastal jump-off for China’s inland Kunlun Station traverse. Resupply vessels — typically the icebreaker Xuelong — operate out of Fremantle, Western Australia.
The Larsemann Hills location means the station sits on exposed rock, giving it a slightly less hostile feel than plateau stations. Independent access is impossible — all logistics run through official Chinese Antarctic expeditions. Not open to tourists. Fremantle remains the nearest practical resupply and logistics port for this sector of East Antarctica.
