Concordia Station Belgian-German Antarctic Base
Concordia sits on Dome C, deep in the East Antarctic ice sheet, and is one of only three year-round stations on the high plateau. Operated jointly by IPEV (France) and PNRA (Italy), it supports roughly 15 people in winter and up to 60 in summer. This is as remote as it gets on the continent — isolation here is legendary, used as a Mars mission analog. There are no roads in; access is by ski-equipped aircraft from Mario Zucchelli or direct air from Hobart. The station handles logistics for deep-field science traverses crossing the plateau.
No tourist access. This one’s for the record — overlanders planning any permitted science-support traverse across East Antarctica would coordinate through here. Best season for aircraft access is November through February. Outside that window, the station goes fully dark and isolated.
