Serra do Mar Coastal Range Circuit
Colonial gold routes through cloud forest
The Serra do Mar circuit follows colonial-era paths and logging roads through Brazil’s last remaining Atlantic rainforest between Santos and Campos do Jordão. These mountain roads originally carried gold from interior mines to coastal ports, threading through cloud forests where howler monkeys still wake you at dawn. The route climbs from sea level to over 1,800 meters, crossing the Continental Divide at Pico do Jaraguá before descending into the Paraíba Valley through sections of original cobblestone that’ll test your vehicle’s suspension and your patience.
Moderate difficulty requires high-clearance vehicles but not necessarily 4WD, though wet conditions can make steep sections treacherous. Rainy season (December to March) brings frequent washouts and fog that reduces visibility to meters, while dry winter months offer clearer views but cold mountain nights. Most sections allow camping with landowner permission, and small mountain towns provide fuel and supplies. The payoff is experiencing Brazil’s most endangered ecosystem up close — 400-year-old trees, rare bird species, and waterfalls that disappear into cloud forest canopies.
