Nokhu Crags to Lake Agnes — Colorado State Forest Never Summer Backcountry Drive

Most people drive past the turnoff on Colorado Highway 14 over Cameron Pass and never know this road exists. The route climbs from the highway near the Michigan Ditch into the Colorado State Forest, pushing up a rocky two-track toward Lake Agnes — a high-alpine lake sitting at just over 10,600 feet, walled on three sides by the ragged volcanic spires of the Nokhu Crags. The access road is short, barely four miles one way, but it gains elevation fast on loose rock and embedded boulders. The drainage crossings are seasonal — early summer can see significant water — and the final approach to the lake basin gets genuinely rocky. It’s a place that punches well above its mileage in scenery, with the Never Summer Range reflected clean in the lake on a calm morning.
This road demands a high-clearance 4WD with good articulation; the boulder sections in the upper half will scrape and high-center anything less. Lockers or a locker-equivalent up front makes the upper rocky section dramatically cleaner. Best run mid-July through September — snow typically closes the upper road until late June or later in big snow years. Colorado State Forest State Park requires a park pass at entry. Camping is available in designated sites within the state forest; dispersed camping at the lake itself is restricted to protect the fragile alpine basin. Fuel and supplies in Walden, 28 miles north. No cell service on the route. Worth every inch of clearance you’ve got.
