Huaylas Valley Circuit – Cordillera Blanca Foothills
Dramatic Andean valleys beneath Peru's highest peaks
The Huaylas Valley Circuit follows ancient trade routes through the Callejón de Huaylas at 3,000-4,500 meters, running parallel to the snow-capped Cordillera Blanca. This scenic route connects traditional villages like Carhuaz, Yungay, and Caraz, offering constant views of Huascarán (Peru’s highest peak) and access to dozens of high-altitude lakes. The highlight is the detour to Laguna Parón via a technical 4WD track that gains 1,200 meters in just 15 kilometers.
Moderate difficulty with high-altitude challenges — the elevation hits you hard, and weather changes fast. Stock 4WD handles most sections, but carry chains for the lake access roads during rainy season (December-April). Dry season (May-September) offers the clearest mountain views and most reliable road conditions. This route gives you the Cordillera Blanca experience without the Huascaran Circuit crowds, plus authentic village stays and some of the most dramatic mountain scenery on the continent.
