Applewhite Campground — San Bernardino National Forest
Applewhite sits right at the mouth of Lytle Creek, managed by the San Bernardino National Forest, and it’s the kind of campground that doesn’t try to be pretty — it’s functional, accessible, and positioned perfectly for anyone running Lytle Creek Road or the San Gabriel front-country. Sites are exposed and dusty in summer, shaded a bit by cottonwoods near the creek. It fills up on weekends with day-trippers and OHV crowds, so arrive Friday afternoon or early Saturday to lock down a spot. Fire rings and pit toilets on-site.
Access is paved all the way in via Lytle Creek Road off I-15 — no clearance required to reach camp. That said, it gets loud and crowded on summer weekends, especially holiday weekends. Best as a staging camp before you push deeper into the canyon or up toward the ridge country. Cell signal is partial at best down in the drainage.
