San Bernardino National Forest — Lone Pine Canyon Road Upper Dispersed Camp

Upper Lone Pine Canyon sits in a narrow pinyon-juniper band where the San Gabriel Mountains drop hard toward the Mojave. Sites here are flat pull-offs on the west side of the road with open ground for a few rigs — no shade worth mentioning, but the high-desert air and the absence of crowd noise more than compensate. You’re looking south toward the Cajon Pass corridor and north toward the Wrightwood ridgelines. Elevation keeps it cooler than the valley floor by a solid 10–15 degrees in summer.

Access is via the upper end of Lone Pine Canyon Road off Big Pines Highway (CA-2). Road surface is rough dirt and rocky in sections — high-clearance is a practical requirement, not a suggestion. Fire restrictions in the SBNF are aggressive starting late spring; bring a camp stove and skip the wood fire. Cell service fades to nothing past the first couple of miles up the canyon. Ideal as a shoulder-season base for Wheeler Ridge and the PCT corridor.
