Coconino National Forest — Munds Mountain Wilderness Buffer Dispersed Camp

On the eastern flank of the Schnebly Hill corridor, Coconino National Forest land buffers the Munds Mountain Wilderness designation and offers legitimate dispersed camping on open dirt flats and pinyon benches. This is serious red rock country — sandstone formations, sparse juniper, and the kind of quiet you won’t find anywhere near the Sedona resort strip. No facilities. No crowds past the pavement. Bring everything you need including water — there are no developed sources out here. Fire restrictions are aggressively enforced in the Red Rock Ranger District during dry months, so check current conditions before you light anything.

The approach follows FR 153 (Schnebly Hill Road) or forest roads branching off the I-17 side of the rim. High-clearance 4WD is the minimum — these roads chew up soft-roaders. Spring and fall are optimal; monsoon season turns the clay surfaces into axle-sucking mess. This zone sees far less traffic than the Sedona approaches, making it a legitimate hideout if you know where to look.
