Black Rock Campground — Joshua Tree National Park
Black Rock sits at roughly 4,000 feet on the park’s northwest edge, making it cooler than the lower desert camps and surrounded by thick Joshua tree forest and granite boulders. It’s a full-service NPS campground with 99 sites, flush toilets, and potable water — rare luxury inside JTNP. It gets busy on weekends from October through April, and reservations are essential during peak season. Groups, families, and overlanders all converge here, so expect neighbors. Fire rings are provided but fire restrictions apply seasonally.
Access is off Joshua Lane from Hwy 62 near Yucca Valley — paved all the way in, so even a two-wheel-drive rig handles it fine. A host is on-site most of the season. Cell signal is spotty but occasionally usable. This is also the southern terminus of the California Riding and Hiking Trail if you want to stretch your legs.
