El Malpais Information Center — Grants NM-117 Gateway
The El Malpais Information Center sits right on NM-117 on the east side of Grants and is the primary NPS contact point for the monument. Rangers here can brief you on Zuni-Acoma Trail conditions, flag any active fire closures or flash flood watches in the surrounding sandstone country, and hand you the paper map that’s actually useful out there. There’s a small interpretive exhibit, restrooms, and a parking area big enough for a truck and trailer.
Hours vary by season — the center is typically open daily in spring and fall but may have reduced hours or closures in summer and winter. Confirm ahead by phone. This is also your last reliable stop before heading south on NM-117 toward the trailhead — top off water here. Cell coverage in Grants is decent along the main corridor.
Brief here before the lava. No excuses.
