BLM Grants — Bluewater Lake State Park Campground
Bluewater Lake sits at around 7,400 feet in a quiet canyon west of Grants, managed by New Mexico State Parks. It’s one of the few spots in this corridor with reliable drinking water, flush toilets, and electrical hookups — a legitimate resupply and reset point if you’re running El Malpais country or the Zuni-Acoma corridor. The lake is stocked with rainbow and channel catfish, and most visitors are here to fish. Campsites are a mix of open and partly shaded, with a full-service boat ramp. It doesn’t have the raw desert drama of the lava fields, but it’s got amenities nothing else nearby can match.
Access is off I-40 at Exit 63 (Thoreau/Bluewater), then south about 7 miles on NM-412 — paved the whole way. Any rig can make it in. Site fees apply; reservations available through New Mexico State Parks. A solid base camp before or after the dusty Zuni-Acoma push, especially if you need a shower and a cell signal check.
