Uncompahgre Plateau — Dave Wood Road Summit Viewpoint

Point of Interest

Dave Wood Road climbs from the Montrose side onto the Uncompahgre Plateau and hits a broad open stretch near the rim where the terrain falls away to the east. From here you’re looking across the Uncompahgre Valley toward the full San Juan wall — Red Mountain, the Cimarrons, and the ragged edges of the Sneffels Range. It’s the visual gateway to the plateau for anyone approaching from Montrose, and it hits harder than you expect for a dirt-road drive.

The road is graded gravel and accessible to high-clearance 2WD in dry conditions, but snow closes it from late fall through spring. No facilities. Cell service drops off fast once you crest the rim. Worth a stop even if you’re just transitioning to Flattop Mountain Road — this is where you first understand the scale of what you’re getting into.
