Trans-Labrador Highway — Esker Ridge Dispersed Camp, Labrador Plateau
The Trans-Labrador Highway between Labrador City and the Quebec border crosses a vast glacially-sculpted plateau littered with eskers — long, sinuous gravel ridges left by meltwater rivers under the last ice sheet. Flat-top esker spines alongside the highway offer elevated, well-drained camp spots with panoramic views across taiga and muskeg. No facilities, no signage, no neighbours. This is what remote looks like. Caribou are a real possibility any time of year. Skies here are genuinely dark — Bortle Class 2 territory.
Road is gravel with variable maintenance between Churchill Falls and Labrador City. High clearance recommended; 4WD helpful in shoulder seasons when frost heaves and mud are active. Fuel up in Churchill Falls or Labrador City before heading out — there’s nothing between them for roughly 300 km. Black flies and mosquitoes are ferocious June through early July. Water from nearby lakes and streams requires treatment.
Esker camp, Bortle-2 skies, pure Labrador wild
