Ruta Nacional 52 – Paso de Jama Border Crossing
Andean crossing to another planet
Ruta Nacional 52 climbs from Salta’s valleys to the Chile border at Paso de Jama, reaching 4,200 meters through some of Argentina’s most alien terrain. The route passes massive salt flats at Salinas Grandes, where 4,000 square kilometers of crystallized salt stretch to the horizon like a frozen sea. Beyond the mining town of San Antonio de los Cobres, the paved road threads between volcanic peaks and high-altitude lakes populated by flamingos and vicuñas.
Though paved, this route demands respect for altitude – many drivers experience headaches and nausea above 3,500 meters. Any vehicle handles the asphalt, but carry altitude sickness medication, extra water, and warm clothing. Weather changes rapidly at elevation; summer storms can drop temperatures 30 degrees in minutes. Best driven April-October when snow doesn’t close the pass. The payoff: witnessing landscapes that look more Mars than Earth.
