Central Kalahari Game Reserve — Deception Valley Roadside Dispersed Camp

Deception Valley sits inside the Central Kalahari Game Reserve and has become a landmark on any Trans-Kalahari crossing that dips south into the CKGR. The fossil riverbed is wide, pale, and utterly exposed — lion, cheetah, and brown hyena are regulars here. Camping is primitive and self-sufficient: no facilities, no water, no rubbish collection. You pick a spot on the sandy track edge or in a cleared area and that’s your camp. Firewood collection is prohibited inside the reserve — bring your own. The silence at night here is world-class.

Access requires a 4WD and entry permits purchased in advance through Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks (DWNP) in Maun or Gaborone. Sand tracks inside the reserve can be deep and corrugated. Fuel up fully in Ghanzi before entering — there is nothing inside. Best season is dry season May–October when the roads are firm and game concentrates around the few remaining water sources.
