Circuito Grande – Tierra del Fuego Interior
End-of-world solitude where few dare venture
This unmarked circuit cuts deep into Tierra del Fuego’s interior, far from the tourist shuffle of Ushuaia’s main attractions. The route strings together abandoned sawmills, working sheep estancias, and ghost settlements via ranch tracks that haven’t seen maintenance since the lumber boom ended. Key waypoint is the ruins of Estancia San Justo, where you’ll find the remains of the world’s southernmost steam locomotive, rusting in sub-Antarctic winds.
Difficult terrain with creek fords, bog sections, and exposure to sudden weather changes – this is serious backcountry where GPS failures can turn deadly. High clearance essential, 4WD mandatory for the bog crossings. November through March only; winter conditions are genuinely life-threatening. Carry emergency gear, extra fuel, and food for a week minimum. No cell service, no bail-out points once committed. The reward is solitude most overlanders never experience – true end-of-world emptiness where condors outnumber people a thousand to one.
