Ruta Nacional 40 – Mendoza Wine Country Circuit

The RN40 Mendoza section cuts through some of Argentina’s highest vineyard territory, where the pavement ends and the real wine country begins. This route tackles the foothills east of the Andes, connecting remote bodegas via dusty ranch roads that wind through terraced vineyards at elevations most tourists never see. The technical highlight is the Paso de la Totora crossing, a rocky descent that separates weekend warriors from serious drivers.

Moderate to difficult depending on seasonal conditions – spring snowmelt turns creek crossings into proper challenges. You’ll want high clearance minimum, though lockers help on the steeper vineyard access roads. Best tackled March through May when harvest crews have cleared the worst washouts but before winter weather locks down the high passes. Fuel up in Mendoza city; services disappear quickly once you leave the main valley. The payoff is world-class wine tasting at family bodegas that don’t see tour buses.
