Honister Pass — Lakeland Slate Mine Summit Road and Fell Trailhead
Honister Pass sits at the head of Borrowdale in the Lake District, cresting at 1,176 ft on the B5289 between Borrowdale and Buttermere. It’s the real deal — 25% gradients, single-track with passing places, stone walls close enough to scrape if you drift, and a working slate mine (Honister Slate Mine) right at the top that’s been extracting Westmorland Green slate since the 17th century. The mine runs via ferrata and underground tours, and there’s a small gift shop and café at the summit building. Park up here and you’re on the doorstep of Great Gable, Grey Knotts, and the Haystacks ridge — Wainwright’s own favourite summit.
B-road so legally open year-round, but ice and snow close it in practice most winters — check Cumbria Highways alerts before a January run. High-clearance isn’t required but wide vehicles will hate the walls. Busy in summer. The summit car park charges a fee and fills quickly — early morning is your window.
25% grades, slate walls, Wainwright country.
