Carrowmore Megalithic Cemetery — Sligo Passage Tomb Complex

Carrowmore sits a few kilometres west of Sligo town in the shadow of Knocknarea hill and holds the densest concentration of megalithic monuments in Ireland — dolmens, passage tombs, and stone circles dating back over 5,500 years. It predates the famous Newgrange by centuries. The site feels open and exposed in the way Irish bogland does, the tombs scattered across rough pasture with the Atlantic sky pressing down. Knocknarea looms to the west, crowned by the unexcavated cairn of Medb’s tomb, adding weight to the whole landscape.

Access is off the R292 road and well-signposted. The OPW visitor centre on-site provides context and has basic facilities. Open seasonally — check OPW hours before arriving out of season. The surrounding area is flat and accessible to any vehicle. Worth pairing with a walk up Knocknarea for the full elevated view over Sligo Bay and the surrounding megalithic landscape.
