Bissett to Nopiming Provincial Park — Manigotagan River Road Wilderness Circuit

Provincial Road 314 and its gravel spurs push northeast out of Bissett into the Precambrian heart of Nopiming Provincial Park — a name meaning ‘entrance to the wilderness’ in Ojibwe, and it earns that title fast. The route follows the Manigotagan River drainage through ancient granite ridges, black spruce bog, and lake-studded terrain that hasn’t changed much since the fur trade era. Key waypoints include the Manigotagan River bridge crossing, the Bird Lake campsite spur, and the Tulabi Falls access junction where the road surface degrades sharply to loose gravel with embedded rock shelves. Expect seasonal washouts near km 40 and soft shoulders after rain.

A stock 4WD with at least 8 inches of clearance handles it in dry conditions, but high-clearance is strongly recommended after spring melt or heavy rain when the road surface turns greasy and sections flood. Cell service drops to zero past Bird Lake — bring a satellite communicator. Best season is late June through September; the bugs in May are genuinely biblical. No permit required. Fuel in Bissett before you leave; there’s nothing beyond that point. What you get at the end is real wilderness solitude, pike fishing, and a sky full of stars with zero light pollution.
