Nopiming Provincial Park — Winnipeg River to Tulabi Falls Backcountry Road

Shield granite and boreal silence, no signal.

Moderate

Nopiming means ‘entrance to the wilderness’ in Ojibwe, and this route earns that name. Starting near the Manigotagan River bridge on PR-314, the track pushes northeast through black spruce and jack pine, crossing Shield bedrock shelves and skirting Tulabi Lake before dropping to the Tulabi Falls day-use area. The road surface alternates between packed gravel, exposed rock ledges, and muddy clay stretches that collect water after any rain. The Winnipeg River system flanks the western approach, and moose crossings on the low sections near the river delta are near-guaranteed at dawn or dusk.

This is a high-clearance route but not a hardcore rock-crawler’s trail — a stock 4WD with all-terrains handles it when dry, but wet conditions transform the clay sections into tire-sucking punishment that will strand a two-wheel-drive rig. Cell service is essentially nonexistent past Bissett. Manitoba Parks requires no permit for day use but check current road conditions with Manitoba Infrastructure before committing. Best window is late June through September. Carry water, a recovery kit, and extra fuel — Bissett is your last reliable fill-up.
