South Lake Dispersed Camping

High-elevation dispersed sites near South Lake with alpine scenery and trailhead access to the John Muir Wilderness.

Scattered primitive camping spots along the South Lake Road corridor and around the lake itself at 9,750 feet elevation. Sites range from roadside pullouts to more secluded spots requiring short walks. Most have fire rings built by previous campers, with stunning views of the surrounding granite peaks and easy access to fishing and hiking.

Road is paved to the lake but sites are on dirt spurs. Popular area that fills up on weekends and holidays. No facilities or water sources – come prepared. Snow typically clears by late June and returns in October.
